Life is crazy now

The trip home was interesting. We made it to Atlanta and then the flight to Nashville was cancelled due to weather. Delta kept promising another flight and after many gate changes and about 6 hours of waiting we stayed in Atlanta that night. The kids held up remakably well and there were no meltdowns, we were very surprised. The next morning Juan was not in a good mood but after about an hour he was fine. We think the excitement of another plane ride curbed a lot of the possible issues that could have arisen.

So, now we are home and it is just non stop with the boys. They love to ride their bikes outside. Johnnatan kept insisting he needed training wheels but we helped him for two days and he is now riding his bike. He is very proud of his accomplishment! We are busy scheduling optometrist, dentist and doctor appointments. We were told by the ICBF in Colombia that both Jeison and Johnnatan need glasses.

Things are going well and the boys seem to be adjusting to the changes. We are having one issue with food. They don't seem to like much. So far they may or may not eat a hamburger. They will eat hotdogs but Johnnatan does not like his cooked. They will eat plain pasta if it is mixed with milk. But tomato sauce of any kind is out of the question. Eggs, toast and cereal are good. They also like fruit. They were very picky in Colombia as well and did not eat much the ladies made at the hotel. So, it is a challenge at the moment.

  1. Hi, This is Jan. We adopted our 3 from Colombia and just got home in December of 08. I thought I would tell you some of the things the kids really liked to eat. Maybe it will help. I totally know what you mean. Although now it is MUCH better. They like chicken and rice!!!!! Ate it all day sometimes. From there we have made soups with a little celery and onion. I just cook chicken legs in the crock pot with a little salt and make plain rice and they are SO happy. They would have starved at first without that discover. Apparently they ate it daily in Colombia. Cummin is the main spice they seem to enjoy. They like curry to but nothing spicy. They like drinkable yogurt. Even put it on cereal...whatever. Of course fruit, fruit and more fruit. Lemonade. Cereal. Chicken nuggets and fries. They still don't like hamburgers or cheese, only a little pasta but making progress. One of the kids eats almost anything because he had some very hungry times before the ICBF was involved. Also they like tuna on rice warmed. I just discover this one. They ate this in Colombia too. Wished I would have known. My bio kids say they will cry if we eat chicken and rice one more day! Hope it helps.

  2. It took our kids a long while to eat hamburger or pasta as well. And it seemed everything we gave them was pica (hot). We finally figured out that anything salted was making them say pica. You'll figure it out over time. I think the more bland you can get at first, the better. I second the whole chicken thing. Our loved all versions of making chicken so we literally stuck with it for a while. All veggies were gradually introduced. Even some of the things they ate in Colombia, they refused here. My biggest selection is not to write anything off after them not liking it one time. Try it multiple time. I know our kids didn't like chili or spaghetti at all, but now those are some of their favorite meals. Hang in there. It does get better!

  3. If you ask them if there is anything they would like to eat, I would gladly try to help you get a recipe and post it on my blog.

  4. Glad both of you and the boys made home safely even if it was late. seems like you are getting some internet help but be careful. It was something about the boys diet. I am glad about the fruit and milk. you are going to be excellent parents and once the doctors' visits are complete school starts and you have to re-educate yourselves. Ha-Ha It willnot be easy. See you soon Love John and Karen

  5. Glad you made it home! Sounds like you hit the weather coming into TN and we hit it going out! We were trying to LEAVE Nashville on Thursday and got delayed, but eventually made it out.
I am praying that everything evens out for you all soon and will as little stress as possible. God will give you the love and patience to endure the tough stuff!
